Effects of erythromycin on contractility of isolated myometrium from pregnant rats
Article Abstract:
The antibiotic erythromycin appears to inhibit uterine contraction. Researchers exposed strips of uterine tissue from rats to erythromycin and measured the contraction of the samples after stimulation with oxytocin. Oxytocin causes uterine contraction. Erythromycin inhibited uterine contraction in the presence of oxytocin. The concentration of erythromycin was similar to that achieved in humans after receiving intravenous infusions of erythromycin. Erythromycin is often used to prevent premature labor.

Predominance of serotype V and frequency of erythromycin resistance in Streptococcus agalactiae in Ohio
Article Abstract:
Group B Streptococcus serotype V is becoming more common in the US, according to a study of 349 group B streptococcal specimens isolated from patients' blood in three Ohio hospitals. Twenty-seven percent of the isolates were serotype V, compared to less than 20% for serotypes Ia, Ib, II, and III. Twelve percent of the isolates were resistant to erythromycin and 8% were resistant to clindamycin.

Screening for postpartum depression in an inner-city population
Article Abstract:
Doctors should do more to identify low-income women who have postpartum depression. In a study of 121 new mothers in an inner-city population, 27 (22%) had a score of 10 or more on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Only 16 of these women were identified by their doctors.
