An orthostatic uterovascular syndrome - a prospective, longitudinal study
Article Abstract:
Changes in maternal blood circulation while standing increase as pregnancy progresses and the uterus enlarges. These changes affect uterine contractions and are known as orthostatic uterovascular syndrome. Measurements of maternal heart rate, fetal heart rate and uterine activity were performed regularly on 40 healthy, pregnant women beginning at 20 weeks' gestation. Final measurements were made within one week after delivery. Maternal heart rate was 12 beats per minute higher when the women were standing than when they were reclining. Orthostatic uterovascular syndrome occurred in two women at 24 weeks' gestation. The syndrome had developed in 71% of the women by 38 weeks. No uterine contractions were observed when the women were reclining. However, when they were raised upright the maternal heart rate increased and uterine contractions occurred. The frequency of contractions increased as the pregnancy progressed. The contractions were felt by only 20% of the women in an upright position.

Successful treatment of fetal megavesica in the first half of pregnancy
Article Abstract:
The use of a procedure to sample fetal abdominal fluid called vesicocentesis early in pregnancy appears to be beneficial in some fetuses with megavesica. Megavesica is an obstruction of the urethra and is more common in male fetuses. Markers of kidney function were evaluated after vesicocentesis was performed on nine fetuses with megavesica. This involves removing urine from the bladder and it improved the condition of four fetuses who underwent the procedure at 13 to 18 weeks of pregnancy. Similar positive effects with this procedure were not seen in the older fetuses.
