Elective cesarean delivery to reduce the transmission of HIV
Article Abstract:
Cesarean delivery may reduce the risk of transmitting HIV between mother and child. About 70% of these transmissions occur during childbirth. One way to prevent this is to reduce the baby's exposure to maternal blood containing the virus. A 1999 study found that cesarean section significantly reduce the risk of transmitting HIV between mother and baby. Women who took zidovudine before delivery had an even lower risk if they had a cesarean delivery. However, cesarean delivery can cause complications. Newer drugs are available that can reduce the amount of virus in the blood to undetectable levels. This may eliminate the need for a cesarean delivery.

Progesterone and preterm delivery -- deja vu all over again
Article Abstract:
Weekly injections of the hormone 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate may prevent premature birth in some women with a previous premature delivery, according to a study published in 2003. Premature birth is a serious problem in the US, particularly in poor black women. Sixty percent of the women in this study were black, and 37% of those who received the weekly injections had a second premature delivery compared to 55% of those who did not have the injections.

Oral hyoglycemic drugs for gestational diabetes
Article Abstract:
The drug glycuride appears to be an effective alternative to insulin injections for pregnant women with diabetes. It does not cross the placenta and should not affect the fetus adversely. However, this may not be true for other sulfonylurea drugs.
