Massive decline in lung liquid before vaginal delivery at term in the fetal lamb
Article Abstract:
The volume of fluid in fetal lungs may decline significantly in the last days of pregnancy, which may improve the respiratory function of babies born at full term. Excessive fluid in the lungs after birth prevents proper respiration. Researchers measured fetal lung fluid volume in lambs 7 days before full gestation, and at term at the end of labor. More than 75% of the fluid present a week before full term was cleared from the lungs by the end of gestation. Depriving a fetus of this process by delivering by cesarean section before full term may increase the risk of respiratory problems.

Differences in TDx fetal lung maturity assay values between twin and singleton gestations
Article Abstract:
The TDx fetal lung maturity assay may overestimate lung maturity in twin fetuses. This was the conclusion of a study of 830 pregnancies, which showed that the TDx fetal lung maturity assay was an average of 22 milligrams per gram higher in twins than in single fetuses of the same gestational age.

The association between meconium and the production and reabsorption of lung liquid and lactate loss by in vitro lungs from fetal guinea pigs
Article Abstract:
The presence of meconium does not interfere with fluid production by fetal lungs but it may interfere with fluid reabsorption, according to a study in guinea pigs. Meconium is a substance that collects in the fetal intestines and becomes the first bowel movement of a newborn baby.
