Electronic data standards group set to accept members
Article Abstract:
The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) has scheduled its first meeting for Apr 1995, at which it will elect a board of directors and set up technical advisory groups. WEDI was founded in 1991 to promote the establishment of EDI in the medical environment, but faded into oblivion when national healthcare reform proposals were defeated in Congress. The group now intends to emphasize policy and implementation issues, rather than technical issues, and promote use of American National Standards Institute standards. WEDI sees EDI as a way to reduce health costs and improve efficiency, when implemented on a national basis.

National standard could boost electronic claim filing
Article Abstract:
The American National Standards Institute has approved a new data transmission format that can be used in universal electronic claims filing for the healthcare industry. The vast number of different formats and the high cost of electronic filing has discouraged many hospitals and physicians from using electronic data interchange. Small practices will be able to use electronic claims filing if billing software vendors incorporate the new format into their programs.
