Electronic record system focuses on clinical data
Article Abstract:
HealthPoint's new electronic clinical information system, HealthPoint ACS, is designed for the ambulatory care setting and allows physicians to keep coordinated records of patient visits. Less than 5% of ambulatory patient records are computerized as of early 1997, but nearly 75% of group practices with over 20 physicians plan implementation of computer-based patient records by 1999, and Kaiser Permanente, the U.S.'s largest health maintenance organization, will be investing $500 million for computer-based medical records.

Reaching out to patients - electronically
Article Abstract:
Future health care services may be provided electronically. These electronic links will enable physicians to monitor major medical conditions automatically and patients will become more involved with their own health care. A test being conducted with hemophiliacs has them keeping a record of their bleeding and their treatments on a personal computer. The record is then transmitted to the health care provider by modem.

Confidentially speaking
Article Abstract:
Several health care providers have avoided computerizing their records because of a concern about privacy but Congress has introduced privacy bills during 1995. Health care providers are also concerned about the expense, loss of control and the lengthy learning period that will also be introduced with the implementation of a computerized system.
