Elevated mortality associated with armed conflict -- Democratic Republic of Congo, 2002
Article Abstract:
The Democratic Republic of Congo in the fall of 2002 had the highest mortality rate in the world. The mortality rate in the eastern provinces was 3.5 deaths per 1,000 people per month and among children under five, the rate was 9 deaths per 1,000 people per month. There was an armed conflict between 1998 and 2002 in the DRC, and much of the fighting occurred in the eastern provinces.
