Trends in prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension in the United States, 1988-2000
Article Abstract:
The number of Americans who have high blood pressure is increasing, according to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys of 1988-1991 and 1999-2000. During the 1999-2000 survey, 29% of the participants had high blood pressure, 4% more than in the 1988-1991 survey. High blood pressure was more common in the elderly, African-Americans, and in overweight and obese people. Only one-third were receiving adequate treatment.

Hypertension prevalence and stroke mortality across populations
Article Abstract:
A report published in 2003 found that fewer people in North America have high blood pressure and fewer die from stroke compared to Europe. Stroke is one of the complications of high blood pressure, and blood pressure generally increases as people age. More research may determine why blood pressure increases with age and what can be done about it.
