Eleven myths of dentoalveolar surgery
Article Abstract:
Many myths about dental surgery persist, despite scant evidence of their validity. Aspirin does inhibit blood clotting, but dental surgery need not be delayed because the patient uses aspirin. Salt water is often recommended as a postoperative mouthrinse, even though patients cannot consistently mix a proper physiological salt solution, and there is no justification to prefer saline over tap water. Drinking from a straw, carbonated drinks, and alcohol do not appear to increase the risk of a dry socket after tooth surgery, and menstruation and pregnancy do not complicate dental procedures.
