Perinatal effects of Gardnerella vaginalis deciduitis in the rabbit
Article Abstract:
Infection with the bacterium Gardnerella (G.) vaginalis during pregnancy appears to have minimal effect on the maternal rabbit while exerting a significant effect on the health of the fetus. The uteri of 17 pregnant rabbits were infected with G. vaginalis on day 20 or 21 of gestation, and the uteri of 14 were injected with a salt solution. None of the mothers in either group died. Three of the rabbits infected with G. vaginalis developed fever and two delivered prematurely. All of their fetuses died. None of the rabbits in the other group delivered prematurely or developed fever. The live-birth rate among rabbits infected with G. vaginalis was significantly lower than that of the other group. All rabbits infected with G. vaginalis developed deciduitis and 88% of the infected rabbits developed amnionitis. The average fetal weight in the infected group was 12.8 grams (g) compared with 16.8 g in the other group. Ten (60%) of the G. vaginalis-infected fetuses had severe brain damage compared with none of the fetuses in the other group.
