Emergency: dealing with sports-related dental trauma
Article Abstract:
Prompt evaluation and appropriate treatment can minimize the long-term effect of dental injury from sports accidents. First aid at the site includes putting displaced teeth back into place, recovering missing teeth and either cleaning them with saline or water and replacing them or immersing them ideally in milk for transport. The treating dentist should take a history and then thoroughly examine the mouth, jaws, and teeth. X rays should be taken. The object of treatment of fractured, displaced, or expelled teeth is to maintain the life of the tooth pulp if possible. Treatment may include applying a protective coating and stabilizing the tooth in position. Root canal treatment may be needed if the tooth dies. Injured athletes should also be prescribed antibiotics and given a tetanus booster. Replanted teeth may eventually be lost, but most last for many years before this occurs.
