Employees up front make a big difference
Article Abstract:
Front line personnel in private medical practices often take their cues from physicians where relations with patients are concerned. A doctor who is impatient and always in a hurry will more often than not have a receptionist who is the same way. Visiting a doctor is stressful enough; support personnel should not compound this stress. When hiring employees, physicians should value character traits - warmth, friendliness - over employment experience.

Should physicians abide by a higher standard?
Article Abstract:
Critics of self-referrals to facilities owned by physicians should consider the need for services performed before accusing doctors of conflict of interest. Physicians have a constitutional right to invest their money in these facilities. However, if a physician loses the patient's trust because of doubt concerning the motives behind self-referral, the physician-patient relationship will be damaged.

Responsibilities remain even after managed care switch
Article Abstract:
Managed care companies often hire physicians as consultants and medical directors to help advise the company on the efficient use and allocation of funds for health care services. Physicians in such positions should be advocates for patient health and should encourage physician providers to delivery quality health care while eliminating inefficient services.
