Endovaginal ultrasonographically guided transvaginal drainage for treatment of pelvic abscesses
Article Abstract:
Ultrasonography may be used to guide needle aspirations of pelvic abscesses conducted through the vagina. Surgery is the standard treatment for pelvic abscesses that are not cured with antibiotics. Researchers performed 34 ultrasonographically-guided transvaginal needle aspirations of pelvic abscesses on 31 women. Twenty-six (84%) of the 31 women were cured of abscesses as a result of transvaginal drainage. The other five required surgery. Transvaginal drainage is less invasive than surgery, and reduces the complications associated with pelvic surgery. Successful transvaginal drainage may keep a woman's fertility intact. It does not require general anesthesia or the use of fluorescent dyes and x-rays. Patients experience some pain during the procedure.

Real-time ultrasonographically guided removal of nonpalpable and intramuscular Norplant capsules
Article Abstract:
Two physicians describe their methods of removing Norplant capsules that are not easily seen or felt under the skin. Ultrasound imaging was used to detect the implants in 24 women. Once the implant was detected, various instruments were used under local anesthesia to remove the implant. They included straight and curved forceps and the Norgrasp clamp, which is a modified vasectomy clamp.

Transrectal ultrasonographically guided drainage of gynecologic pelvic abscesses
Article Abstract:
Doctors describe the use of transrectal needle aspiration of pelvic abscesses in 15 women. The needle was inserted into the pelvis through the wall of the rectum and was guided by ultrasound imaging.
