Energy expenditure in children aged 1.5 to 4.5 years: a comparison with current recommendations for energy inake
Article Abstract:
The total energy expenditure of a group of 93 children aged between 1.5-4.5 years was measured and compared with the 1991 United Kingdom recommended estimates of energy intake. The mean values for total energy expenditure were below current recommendations by nearly 10% in the boys and 12% in the girls. In the age groups of 1.5-2.5, 2.5-3.5 and 3.5-4.5 years, the mean values of energy expenditure for the boys were 359, 341 and 327 kJ/kg respectively and in the girls it was 347, 317 and 310 kJ/kg respectively.

Measurement of total body water by bioelectrical impedance in chronic renal failure
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the ability of bioelectrical impendance analysis (BIA) to measure total body water (TBW) in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). The results indicate that BIA is less accurate in measuring TBW in patients with CRF than in healthy individuals. Abnormal variability in the distribution of fluid between intra- and extracellular compartments may be the major cause of decreased accuracy of TBW measurement using BIA.

Converting Tanner-Whitehouse reference tricep and subscapular skinfold measurements to standard deviation scores
Article Abstract:
Researchers adopted the LMS approach to assess the tricep and the subscapular skinfold thickness in children from 1 to 19 years, on the basis of Tanner and Whitehouse standards. Unlike the standard deviation (SD) scores, which provide with inaccurate statistics due to the oblique course of the population data, the LMS is a faster method and expresses the biological data accurately.
