Environmental constraints on health: listening to children's views
Article Abstract:
A study involving children from four schools in mainly working-class areas of Birmingham, England, considered children's views on the ways in which environmental factors limit their outdoor activities. It was found that there are many different barriers to children keeping healthy and active. These include danger from traffic, fear of strangers and cultural and social considerations. It is important that health promoters are aware of the extent to which urban environmental problems can limit the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle in children.

Curbing illegal cigarette sales to children: an assessment of an initiative in Sandwell
Article Abstract:
Surveys in 1990 and 1995 of children and young people in the borough of Sandwell in the UK's West Midlands revealed that large numbers of them may illegally be buying cigarettes from local shops. A project investigating illegal sales was established in 1995/1996 to ascertain, via the Environment and Development Services, whether they were a problem. The survey showed that lower level of sales occurred in Sandwell than in other parts of the country. Future options for continuing the initiative are discussed.
