Epidemiologic risk factors for incident sexually transmitted diseases in young Thai men
Article Abstract:
Sexual contact with commercial sex workers appears to be a major risk factor for contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among Thai military forces conscripts. Determining the risk factors for STDs may help elucidate the relationship between HIV infection and other STDs. Researchers periodically evaluated 2,417 19- to 23-year-old Thai men drafted into the Royal Thai Army and Air Force during their two-year period of service. STDs occurred at a rate of 17 per 100 person-years, of which gonorrhea at 9 per 100 person-years and chancroid at 8 per 100 person-years were the most common. Contact with sex workers increased the risk of contracting an STD threefold. Those who reported consistent use of condoms with sex workers had more than a twofold risk compared with those never visiting sex workers. Those reporting inconsistent or no use had a sevenfold increased risk of STD infection. In addition, the more frequent the visits, the greater the risk.

Changes in sexual behavior and a decline in HIV infection among young men in Thailand
Article Abstract:
A public campaign to promote the use of condoms in brothels has dramatically reduced the incidence of HIV infection in young men in Thailand. In 1990, the Ministry of Public Health ordered the distribution of condoms to all Thai brothels and began a media campaign to encourage their use. A survey of Thai soldiers found that the prevalence of HIV infection fell from 10% to 12% in 1991 to 6.7% in 1995. The percentage of men who had sex with prostitutes fell from 81.4% to 63.8%. And the percentage of men who used condoms increased from 61% to 92.5%. The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases fell from 42.2% to 15.2%.

The association of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), Haemophilus ducreyi, and syphillis with HIV infection in young men in northern Thailand
Article Abstract:
This study followed 21-year old military draftees in northern Thailand for two years, evaluating the incidence among them of sexually transmitted diseases. Herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) and Haemophilus ducreyi may be indicators of high-risk sexual behavior, also indicating risk of HIV infection.
