Epidural analgesia: Have we got it right?
Article Abstract:
Epidural pain relief is available at many district general hospitals and there are great benefits. However there may be the prospect of increased epidural infections following a recent report detailing epidural abscesses in patients. The report recommended that patients with already infected lower-limb cutaneous wounds should not be given epidural analgesia. The assumption of haematogenous spread may not be correct however, as there are not studies that look specifically at contamination risks when drugs are added to infusates.

Acute pain: its physiology and the pharmacology of analgesia
Article Abstract:
Nursing care and treatment will make patients who are suffering from acutepain more comfortable. It is essential that nurses make an initial assessment, recognise the painstate and have an awareness of the pain process and side effects. Acute post-operative pain isoften treated with intramuscular opioids such as morphine, but effective pain management can beassisted with analgesics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
