A whole blood alternative to traditional methods for CD4+ T lymphocyte determination
Article Abstract:
An innovative method for determining T cell subtypes may be effective in developing countries that can not perform flow cytometry. The method involves coating small microspheres called CytoSpheres with monoclonal antibodies against CD4 and CD8 T cells. Then the microspheres are mixed with whole blood to allow the microspheres to bind to T cells. The blood sample is then treated with chemicals to lyse the blood cells and the sample can then be examined under a regular microscope in conjunction with a hemocytometer.
