Weight-for-length reference data for preterm, low-birth-weight infants
Article Abstract:
Weight-for-length reference data in very-low- and low-birth-weight infants should help doctors when detecting deviation from normal growth rates. The Infant Health and Development Program gathered weight-for-length data on 867 infants born prematurely and at low-birth weight. Information was gathered at eight nationally dispersed sites and included various racial groups. Infants were measured periodically from birth and values were given for gestationally corrected age. Tables distinguish between boys and girls and between infants of birth weights 2,000 grams or less and 2,001 to 2,500 grams.

Water supplementation of infants in the first month of life
Article Abstract:
Many mothers give water to their new babies, despite recommendations against it. Infants, particularly in the first month of life, get sufficient water from formula or breast milk, and additional water can be dangerous. Researchers reviewed surveys of 1,677 mothers of neonates. About 25% of women gave their babies water at least three times per week. Mothers who fed formula, those with less than a high school education, and those from low-income families were more likely to give supplemental water.
