Article Abstract:
The UN has taken more of a leadership role in the disability field. The resulting document, 'Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities' consists of 21 guidelines for governments. The achievements made during the 1983-94 Decade of the Disabled Persons were not enough.

A better world for all
Article Abstract:
The United Nations' International Year of Disabled Persons in 1981 started a process of international and domestic reforms, including adoption of the UN Standard on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. Increasing human rights for all has been a consistent goal of the UN.

HIV and infant feeding: an interim statement
Article Abstract:
Mothers infected with HIV risk transmitting the disease to their infants through breastfeeding. However, HIV-positive mothers should breastfeed if the risk of diseases such as diarrhea is higher than the risk of HIV. UNAIDS and WHO generally support breastfeeding and HIV counseling and testing.
