In the line of fire
Article Abstract:
Nurse Paul McCready was attacked by a patient who left him with injuries to his shoulder and neck, resulting in time off work and a course of physiotherapy. The patient who attacked McCready was not mentally ill and to prevent another incident McCready took the action to press charges. The subsequent court case concluded a not guilty verdict on the patient due to lack of evidence, leaving McCready feeling angry and let down. Trusts need to ensure there is a policy of how to deal with assaults on staff and ensure staff understand procedures of legal cases.

A force for good
Article Abstract:
The British Army provides a psychiatric service, staffed by nurses, for soldiers serving in Bosnia. The nurses assess and treat soldiers with psychological or psychiatric problems, returning them to Britain for inpatient care if appropriate. Some soldiers resisted the idea of setting up this service, fearing it would encourage soldiers to feign psychiatric conditions, but most now appreciate the benefits of education and intervention. Soldiers in this area undertake duties including corpse recovery and working with orphans and ethnic cleansing survivors.
