Ergonomics on the plant floor
Article Abstract:
Companies are beginning to take interest in ergonomics as a result of the high incidence of workplace injuries and illnesses and other factors. Initiating an ergonomics program involves undertaking a review of safety and injury records, job analysis, identifying high-risk jobs and creating a staff to handle job modification. Once problem-areas have been determined, training programs can be established to inform employees at all levels about the sources of ergonomic problems and ways of avoiding them. Training should also extend to the use of ergonomic tools and equipment, which are also vital to the success of these programs.

New rules for medical waste
Article Abstract:
New medical waste regulations require health-care facilities to label, separate and properly dispose of infectious waste such as used syringes, bandages and blood samples. The imposition of more stringent rules may be attributed to reported claims of medical waste found along the shores of New Jersey and New York beaches, as well as in community trash bins and landfills. For hospitals and medical offices, these new rules imply liability risks and increasing cost of off-site treatment and disposal. Reliable infectious-waste treatment technology includes incineration and steam sterilization.

Tune out audio hazards
Article Abstract:
Personal audio/radio headsets are being banned by some employers in the occupational setting to ensure an effective safety program. Because of its 'isolating effects' on people who wear them, such equipment can prevent an employee from hearing safety warnings or signs. In addition, continued exposure to a high noise level may impair the hearing capability of an employee who wears personal audio/radio headsets.
