Escaping from unfair peer review's web
Article Abstract:
The AMA has set up guidelines to protect physicians from improper peer review. In addition to setting up the Medical Review Initiative, the AMA has initiated a database on proposed Medicare changes and accepted a seat on the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission, a new organization. The principles governing the AMA's objectives include coverage limitations, confidentiality, reviewer qualifications, review criteria, high-cost case management, appeal procedures, compensation for physician's time and accountability of payers.

Putting more women on medicine's team
Article Abstract:
The number of women physicians is expected to reach 30% of the physician population in the United States by the year 2000. In spite of growth in numbers, organized medicine has not brought women into full participation. The history of women in medicine is traced, from the AMA's declaration of support, in 1868, to increased admission to medical schools by the turn of the century, to 1989, when women made up 38% of medical students.
