The need to bring more minority students into medicine
Article Abstract:
The Assn of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has tried for decades to increase medical college enrollment of minority students - blacks, Hispanics, and American Indians. The proportion of minority students rose to 10% in 1975. However, the percentage of minorities in the US population increased to 19% by 1990, while minority medical students remained at 10% of enrollment. Suggested methods of encouraging minority medical students include setting up health care magnet high schools. Some medical schools, such as Rush Medical College, have set up task forces to help minority students.

No high school diploma, but he teaches surgery
Article Abstract:
Hamilton Naki, a black South African who was unable to afford an education, teaches surgery to postgraduates at the Capetown Medical School but is paid very little. Because he lacks credentials, the 68-year-old is only allowed to operate on animals. World-renowned surgeon Christiaan Barnard considers Naki, who was a member of his heart-transplant backup team, a better technical surgeon than himself. Naki received his training in the animal research laboratory of the University of Capetown, where he began as a gardener.
