Estrogen hits the surface

The discovery of estrogen receptors on the cell surface explained how estrogen could produce rapid effects in bone, breast, blood vessels, and nerve tissue. Prior to that discovery, scientists believed estrogen activated genetic transcription, which would take hours to achieve the final effect.
