Ethical decisions may not be politically correct
Article Abstract:
Physicians face many ethical dilemmas that involve a balancing of rights. Ethical standards are not permanent, and do not always parallel the law. The rights of the individual must be weighed against the rights of a group when considering mandatory immunizations. The donation of organs brings up the conflict of the rights of the living against those of the dead, and abortion pits the rights of the born against the unborn. Other rights, such as self-determination and a right to information, also affect physicians.

Finances push many doctors to look for 'second job.' (selling products to patients raises ethical issues)(Column)
Article Abstract:
Some physicians are reacting to declining compensation levels by seeking a second source of income, such as by selling products to patients. However, the idea brings up ethical questions, because doctors are supposed to do what is best for their patients, instead of what is best for their practice. Patients are vulnerable because of the trust they place in their physicians. Doctors should consider sales only if a product is demonstrably beneficial and reasonably priced.

Can the new 'bad apples' hurt our profession?
Article Abstract:
Physicians who care only about profits may be damaging patients' perception of the entire profession. Sensing this money orientation, patients may come to believe that payment for service guarantees results. Often quite successful financially, these doctors serve as role models, thus insuring an even larger number of profit-driven physicians. In addition, their marketing efforts may draw patients away from other doctors.
