Ethical issues playing increasing role in treatment
Article Abstract:
Speakers at the 1992 International Conference on Health Law and Ethics claimed that medical ethics has become a central concern in treating patients, rather than an idealized concept. For instance, Mark Siegler, of the University of Chicago, called attention to ethical problems for physicians who must deal with transplantation, terminal care, reproductive rights and treatment of AIDS. Advances in biotechnology will emphasize the need for ethicists who can counsel patients and their families in making decisions.

Throw the judges out: Texas doctors play tort reform hardball
Article Abstract:
The Texas Medical Association (TMA) has led a coalition of groups promoting tort reform in Texas by campaigning for state judges that support the reform. After three elections, new judges' decisions have implemented some reform. Cordial relations between the TMA and trial lawyers' groups have smoothed the process somewhat. Tort reform is seen by some physicians as a method for eliminating unfounded malpractice suits that clog the courts and drive up the cost of physician's malpractice insurance.

Senate OKs product liability bill
Article Abstract:
The Senate and the House of Representatives are both considering tort reform bills. The House has passed a bill that includes a clause for a $250,000 cap on noneconomic damages in medical negligence cases, while the Senate's version, which focuses on product liability, contains no provisions for medical reform. The two versions are to be reconciled in a House-Senate conference, but it is unclear whether medical reform will be included in the final version.
