Financial incentives suggested to gain transplant organs
Article Abstract:
Medical officials who solicit organ donations are divided over the issue of how to increase the pool of donors. Some are in favor of a marketing approach wherein donors would be reimbursed in the form of funeral expenses, tax credits or flat fees. Others fear the ethical implications of this strategy and are in favor of a more altruistic approach. Both camps concede that incentives are necessary. Annual organ donations since 1990 have remained flat at 6,600. As a result, five to six people die each day awaiting transplants.
