Ethicists foresee computer vastly changing doctor's role
Article Abstract:
Computers may gradually replace physicians in the future, said some speakers at the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting. This opinion was countered by other panelists, especially doctors, who claimed that computers will serve as a tool, not a substitute for a physician's judgment. Ethicists predicted that diagnosis and procedures might be performed better by computers, but most panelists agreed that human beings will be needed to make decisions involving values.

Toward a new breed of doctor; HMO advocates say physician training must be geared to managed care
Article Abstract:
The growth of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) has increased pressure on medical schools to train more primary care physicians and physicians who are comfortable practicing cost-conscious medicine. Medical schools acknowledge that more primary care physicians are needed, but a paucity of primary care role models and students' preferences for entering specialties limits the ability of these schools to graduate more primary care physicians.

It's true: managed care does squeeze doctor pay
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association is placing the blame for decreasing physician incomes on managed care plans. Cost containment measures, such as cutting reimbursements and restricting patient access to physicians, are contributing to the falling incomes. Physicians in the top 10% of earnings have experienced the most significant drops in income.
