Evaluating mentor performance
Article Abstract:
Health care professionals involved in the training of student nurses should ensure that they assess their performance as a mentor. They should seek feedback from a range of sources, including the nursing team, the team leader/ward manager and the students themselves. Feedback should focus on areas such as orientation to the clinical environment, facilitating critical reflection, showing enthusiasm for student learning and giving verbal and written responses. Attention should also be given to drawing up an action plan for improving mentoring performance.

Developing the role of the nurse mentor
Article Abstract:
The most important part of being a nurse mentor is as a supporter of student nurses. A survey of 39 final-year student nurses and 87 nurse mentors asked them to grade 18 aspects of mentor behaviour. Along with the supportive role, the other most important aspects were the giving of feedback and using the mentor as a role model. The students wanted the mentors to take on a more demanding role which would provide a challenge for the future. Nursing managers would make the final decision as to which type of mentor role would fit into their organisation.
