Evaluation of p24-based antiretroviral treatment monitoring in pediatric HIV-1 infection: Prediction of the CD4(super +) T-cell changes between consecutive visits
Article Abstract:
Mother-to-child transmission is the main cause of HIV-1 infection in young children and care for these children requires simple, inexpensive tests. Tests for HIV-1 RNA or DNA are used for identification of infected children and those found infected, concentrations of CD4(super +) T-cells and HIV-1 RNA are determined every three months to guide decisions about initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and to monitor the efficacy of ART once started.

Adaptation of the ultrasensitive HIV-1 p24 antigen assay to dried blood spot testing
Article Abstract:
The HIV-1 p24 assay to dried blood spot (DBS) plasma antigen test was adapted to considerably reduce the known high background in DBS samples by introducing a peroxidase quenching step. It was found that DBS-p24 and plasma-p24 concentrations correlated well, independent of the ethnic background of the subjects or the HIV-1 subtype.

Trends in antiretroviral therapy use and survival rates for a large cohort of HIV-infected children and adolescents in the United States, 1989-2001
Article Abstract:
Trends in antiretroviral (ARV) use and long-term survival in an observational cohort of HIV-infected children and adolescents in the United States are assessed. Survival rates in the Pediatric Spectrum of HIV Disease Study (PSD) cohort have increased in association with triple-ARV therapy use.
