Article Abstract:
The UK government's 'Patient's Charter' makes no effort to assume responsibility for the problems which patients are facing following dramatic changes in the National Health Service (NHS). There is strong pressure on nurses and doctors to improve standards of patient care, but they are expected to do so without additional resources. There are particular problems for patients who are elderly, who are often unable to express their views effectively. It is now time to draw up a Bill of Rights which will protect elderly and vulnerable patients.

Partnership in action
Article Abstract:
The patient participation group at Woodcote Group Practice, a split-site GP practice in Purley, England, and Coulsdon, England, focuses on activities that will be of use to patients. These include a programme of health-related talks and a patient-to-patient support line. Some new functions are being established as the group develops, and it now produces a quarterly newsletter. Patient participation has been seen to bring improved relations between the practice and its patients and a spirit of teamwork.

Lay involvement in primary care
Article Abstract:
UK Primary Care Groups (PCGs) must involve stakeholders in shaping community health service delivery. A simple means of doing this is to appoint a lay member to the PCG, but other means also exist. These means include patient surveys, workshops, health panels, and consultation with special interest groups. These initiatives present challenges to the health professions, but they can lead to improvements in healthcare and to the formation of better working relationships.
