Evidence-based care in orthodontics and periodontics: a review of the literature
Article Abstract:
Orthodontic treatment in patients with poor oral hygiene can accelerate the bone and tissue loss of periodontal disease. Patients with periodontal disease should be cleared for treatment by a periodontist before orthodontic care is initiated. Moving the teeth can accelerate loss of soft-tissue attachment, induce overgrowth of the gums or gum recession, and hasten bone loss. Each patient should be individually evaluated to ensure that orthodontic treatment will not compromise oral health.
