Evidence of apoptosis in arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia
Article Abstract:
Apoptosis, or cell death, may play a role in the progressive loss of heart cells in arrhythmic right ventricular dysplasia, a severe heart condition. Autopsied heart tissue of six of eight patients with arrythmic right ventricular dysplasia contained cells with DNA fragments, an indication of apoptosis. In contrast, apoptosis was absent in the right ventricles of four people who died of other causes (control group). High levels of protease CPP-32, a requirement for apoptosis, were found in the six patients positive for apoptosis. The control group and the other two heart patients had no or minimal evidence of CPP-32.
