Dofetilide in patients with congestive heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction
Article Abstract:
The anti-arrhythmic drug dofetilide appears to prevent atrial fibrillation in patients with congestive heart failure. Atrial fibrillation means the upper part of the heart beats so rapidly it cannot function properly. Researchers randomly assigned 1518 patients with congestive heart failure to take dofetilide or a placebo every day for an average of 18 months. Dofetilide was able to stop atrial fibrillation and to keep it from recurring. It also reduced the risk of hospitalization for worsening heart failure. However, it did not lower mortality rates.

N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and long-term mortality in stable coronary heart disease
Article Abstract:
The relationship between N-terminal pro-BNP (NT-pro-BNP) levels and long-term mortality from all causes in a large cohort of patients with stable coronary heart disease is assessed. It is found that NT-pro-BNP is a maker of long-term mortality in patients with stable coronary disease and provides prognostic information above and beyond that is provided by conventional cardiovascular risk factors and the degree of left ventricular systolic dysfunction.
