Exogenous reinfection as a cause of recurrent tuberculosis after curative treatment
Article Abstract:
When people develop tuberculosis after being successfully treated for the disease, it is not always a reactivation of the previous disease. Researchers used DNA analysis to identify the bacterial strain that was infecting 16 patients who developed tuberculosis for a second time after being successfully treated during the first infection. In 12 of the patients, the DNA analysis revealed that they were infected with a different strain of bacteria than the strain that caused the first infection. This illustrates the importance of strict infection control procedures when people become infected with tuberculosis so the bacterium is not transmitted to other people.

Antibodies against human herpesvirus 8 in black South African patients with cancer
Article Abstract:
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is very strongly linked to Kaposi's sarcoma in South Africa. Among 3,344 black South Africans who had cancer, 51 had Kaposi's sarcoma, which is a type of skin tumor common in AIDS patients. Blood tests revealed that 83% of these 51 patients had antibodies against HHV-8 compared to 32% of the patients with other types of cancer. However, the presence of HHV-8 did not seem to be associated with HIV infection.
