Pelvic inflammatory disease: management update
Article Abstract:
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) involves infection of the upper female genital tract, usually polymicrobial. Risk factors include youth, sex with multiple partners, lower socioeconomic status, IUD use, and douching. Risk is reduced by factors such as pregnancy and use of oral contraceptives. The minimal diagnostic criteria are lower abdominal tenderness, cervical motion tenderness and adnexal tenderness, but these three signs may also be present in other conditions besides PID. Inpatient treatment with intravenous antibiotics is recommended for nulliparous patients. Based on additional criteria, outpatient treatment by oral medication may be effective as well.

Effective treatment of onychomycosis
Article Abstract:
Onychomycosis is a fungal nail infection which was previously expensive and difficult to treat. Modern medical advances offer effective treatment involving medication and nail debridement. Onychomycosis, once considered a cosmetic disorder, can pose both physical and psychosocial problems for patients. The disease can be caused by yeasts, molds, or nail trauma and can be treated with oral or topical antifungal medications.

Osteoporosis: an update on prevention and treatment
Article Abstract:
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a widespread problem among American women, but prevention and treatment are improving. For women over 50, it eventually causes a bone break in about half of all of them, and half of those with broken hips never walk again. Risk factors, nutrition, exercise, estrogen, bone-resorption inhibitors and bone formation stimulants are covered. Two age-related types of the disease are also detailed.
