Exposure to Patients With Meningococcal Disease on Aircraft--United States, 1999-2001
Article Abstract:
A 62-year-old man developed meningococcal disease after an airline flight from Sydney, Australia, to New York. This disease is caused by a bacterium that can be transmitted through the air. There have been several reports of tuberculosis being transmitted to airline passengers.

Article Abstract:
The number of congenital syphilis cases in the US in 2000 was 52% lower than in 1997, the year before the US began an intensive effort to eliminate syphilis. Congenital syphilis is syphilis in a baby that acquired the infection from its mother.

Approximately 775,000 Americans have developed AIDS as of December 31, 2000 and 448,060 died of the disease. Women, gay men, and intravenous drug users have the highest risk of HIV infection.
