Hypothermia-Related Deaths-Georgia, January 1996-December 1997, and United States, 1979-1995
Article Abstract:
Deaths from hypothermia are not limited to states with severe winters. Hypothermia occurs when body temperature drops. During 1996-1997, three people died from hypothermia in Georgia. Between 1979-1995, an average of 723 deaths from hypothermia occurred each year in the US. Risk factors include advanced age, pre-existing disease, nutritional status, alcohol and drug intoxication, hypothyroidism, mental illness, starvation, poverty, dehydration, immobilizing illnesses, social isolation, and homelessness. Early symptoms include shivering, numbness, fatigue, poor coordination, slurred speech, impaired mental state, blueness or puffiness of the skin, and irrational behavior. Prompt attention at that point can prevent death.
