Extend a helping hand
Article Abstract:
The Long-Term Medical Conditions Alliance (LMCA), which includes 100 organizations, is launching proposals on November 10 1999 for improvements in services to the long-term sick. According to a survey by the Alliance, patients would like to nurses to have greater responsibility and a play a wider role. According to Judy Wilson, director of the LMCA, it is important that extending the role of nurses should not dilute their skills, lengthen waiting lists or reduce their allocation of time for patients.

The unit was set up in 1904, but did not really gain widespread recognition until the early 1970s, when it had to deal with a year-long outbreak of hepatitis B. It cares for patients with a wide range of diseases, including chronic fatigue and infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
