Extending professional practice: benefits and pitfalls
Article Abstract:
Nursesare increasingly expanding their roles in A&E, particularly in the case of nurse practitioners whocan be used to bypass the doctor totally. The National Audit Office accepts that nursepractitioners could reduce A&E waiting times and help to reduce the pressure on junior doctors. There is no clear definition of the role of a nurse, but nurses must consider the legal implicationsand professional issues of their expanded roles, so that they are working within the Scope ofProfessional Practice.
