FTC slams doctor network, PHO

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) concluded a four-year investigation by settling its charges of anticompetitive practices against Montana Associated Physicians Inc. and Billings Physician Hospital Alliance Inc. The FTC accused the doctor network that became Montana Associated Physicians of price-fixing and other activities designed to forestall competition from managed care plans. The doctor network's pres says the physicians were simply trying to remain competitive.

States ask high court to hear Marshfield antitrust case

Twenty-six states have drafted a brief asking the US Supreme Court to review Circuit Court Chief Justice Richard Posner's ruling in the antitrust dispute between the Marshfield Clinic and Blue Cross and Blue Shield United of Wisconsin. The states are concerned that Posner's ruling will undermine antitrust enforcement in the healthcare industry. The Federal Trade Commission supports the states' bid for a case review.
