Congress may ease off-label drug marketing
Article Abstract:
Sens. Connie Mack and Bill Frist have introduced a bill that would allow drug companies to disseminate information about the off-label uses of their medications to physicians. The information would have to come from a source that was not sponsored by the pharmaceutical company. It would disclose that the FDA has not approved the medication for the off-label use, but would give doctors more information about possible alternatives to approved therapies for their patients. Some 40%-60% of prescriptions written each year are for the off-label use of a drug.

Medical Staff Section: regain control of delivery systems
Article Abstract:
Dr. Lee McCormick urged doctors to focus on regaining control of the medical delivery system rather than opposing managed care at his final address to the Organized Medical Staff Section (OMSS) of the American Medical Association. McCormick also voiced his support for the continued development of physician organizations and capitation. The OMSS is supporting a provision which would ban third-party payments, incentives and inducements created to limit medical decision-making by physicians.
