Factors associated with early maternal postpartum discharge from the hospital
Article Abstract:
Early postpartum hospital discharge may be associated with poor use of health care services and poor health outcomes. Using a 1988 survey, researchers analyzed characteristics and outcomes of women discharged early (one hospital night or less) or after regular (48 hours or longer) hospitalization following childbirth. Women who were discharged early were either young and lacking in insurance, or older, intending to breastfeed, and cared for by midwives. Women living in western states were more likely to be discharged early than women in the Midwest or Northeast. Women with poor health risks should receive attention.

Impact of Community Volunteers on Immunization Rates of Children Younger Than 2 Years
Article Abstract:
Community vaccination volunteers can substantially increase the immunization rates of children under 2 years of age. Researchers compared 163 children who either received a referral and coordination by a vaccination volunteer, or did not. At 6 months of age, 75% of the children assisted by volunteers and 54% of children not assisted were up to date on their vaccinations. Children in whom vaccinations were delayed a month or more were nearly three times as likely to remain insufficiently vaccinated at 6 months of age.
