Trends in cancer screening - United States, 1987 and 1992
Article Abstract:
The percentage of US residents who are screened for cancer has increased since 1987, but has still not reached the goals of Healthy People 2000. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey of 1987 and 1992. This survey asks a representative sample of the US population if they have ever had certain cancer screening tests such as mammograms, Pap smears, fecal occult blood tests and rectal exams. The percentage of women who ever had a Pap smear remained stable between 1987 and 1992, but the use of other cancer screening tests increased. The percentage of women who had a mammogram at least doubled in every age and ethnic group. More women also reported having a breast exam. The use of fecal occult blood testing increased as did the percentage who had rectal exams. Many poor Americans may not have a primary care physician to order these tests, or they may not have insurance to cover the costs.

Monitoring Environmental Disease--United States, 1997
Article Abstract:
Many state public health surveillance systems are not meeting one of the national health objectives for 2000 (HP2000), which is to monitor various nonoccupational sentinel environmental diseases. These diseases include asthma, heatstroke, hypothermia, heavy metal poisoning, pesticide poisoning, carbon monoxide poisoning, acute chemical poisoning, and methemoglobinemia. A survey of 174 environmental public health surveillance systems in 51 regional jurisdictions found that screening for childhood lead poisoning was the only sentinel environmental disease that achieves the HP2000 objective.
