Significance of prenatal diagnosis of umbilical cord cyst in a fetus with trisomy 18
Article Abstract:
Fetuses that have umbilical cord cysts and slow growth as revealed by ultrasound examination may have congenital defects such as trisomy 18. A 23-year-old 38 weeks' pregnant woman who had previously given birth to two healthy infants was examined by ultrasound because of suspected intrauterine growth retardation. The fetus was found to be below the fifth percentile for its age, and the umbilical cord and right kidney had cysts. After birth, the baby was observed to have several defects, including rocker-bottom feet, low-set ears, and displaced fingers. He died three days later, and was diagnosed as having trisomy 18, a chromosomal defect. Umbilical cord cysts are rare, but may indicate chromosomal and abdominal wall defects, especially if cysts exist in the second and third trimesters.

Patterns of fetal perinasal fluid flow in cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia
Article Abstract:
Fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia may experience lung insufficiency after birth because their lungs lose fluid while in the womb. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a developmental defect that allows herniation of abdominal contents into the chest. Researchers used Doppler ultrasonography to measure fluid flow from the noses of fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Nasal fluid flow unrelated to movement of the diaphragm took longer in fetuses with diaphragmatic hernia than in normally developed fetuses. Increased time of nasal fluid flow may cause greater loss of lung liquid and lead to lung insufficiency in newborns.
