Farm safety for kids: experts strive to raise awareness about farm hazards
Article Abstract:
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and several private safety groups are promoting the concept of age-appropriate tasks to reduce the incidence of accidents among children in the farm workplace. The OSHA reports that of the 1.5 mil children and adolescents living and working on the farm, an annual average of 100,000 children are injured, while 100 are killed due to accidents involving farm equipment and structures. Private groups such as the Farm Safety 4 Just Kids are promoting farm safety to farm workers and parents by espousing the age-appropriate task concept which will hopefully avert any more injuries on children in the farm.
