Heart attacks a costly liability risk, insurer study finds
Article Abstract:
A Physician Insurers Association of America study on the liability risks associated with acute myocardial infarction found that only malpractice claims stemming from breast cancer and the birth of brain-damaged infants ranked higher in costs than those linked to heart attacks. The study cited misconceptions among medical practitioners regarding disease susceptibility and pressure to lower costs by not ordering available diagnostic tests as possible factors in the high incidence of heart attack-related claims. The study also noted that family practitioners were the ones most frequently sued in this situation.

Polls reveal patient angst about quality of health care
Article Abstract:
The National Coalition on Health Care has reported that 75% of adults believe that health care quality has "serious problems," including greed and cost reductions on the part of insurance companies and hospitals. The survey of 1,011 people found the greatest concern among households with less than $25,000 in yearly income. A different survey of 37,000 patients by the Picker Institute and the American Hospital Association discovered a common desire for more medical information.
