Fermentability of an enzymatically modified solubilised potato polysaccharide (SPP)
Article Abstract:
The fermentability of an enzymatically modified, soluble potato polysaccharide (SPP) in the human gastro-intestinal tract was investigated. Seven healthy subjects who participated in the study were given test meals consisting of SPP, bread baked of wheat flour combined with SPP, oat bran, lactulose and wheat bran. Results showed that SPP fermentation produced a considerable increase in end-expiratory hydrogen. Baking did not affect the fermentability of SPP, indicating that it may be suitable as a fiber supplement in fiber-deficient diets.

Acetate in venous blood for determination of carbohydrate malabsorption
Article Abstract:
The fermentation processes of anaerobic colonic flora produce acetate which can be detected in the peripheral blood. One of the main substrates for acetate formation are carbohydrates and as such malabsorbed carbohydrates can be measured by analyzing for acetate in the blood. A study done on the potential of measuring venous acetate as an index of carbohydrate malabsorption showed that peak rises and acetate versus time curves of enzymatically determined venous acetate may be a sensitive determinant of carbohydrate malabsorption.

The hydrogen breath test in resistant starch research
Article Abstract:
The use of the hydrogen breath test was evaluated in resistant starch (RS) research using five healthy volunteers who were given four different samples of RS. It was shown that the results of the hydrogen breath test is dependent on the source of RS which is reflective of certain types of RS in vivo which are not susceptible to fermentation by colonic flora. This finding also suggests that some RS types may have different ways of being fermented and as such do not produce hydrogen which is detected in the test.
