Fetal alloimmune thrombocytopenia
Article Abstract:
Fetal alloimmune thrombocytopenia can occur early in pregnancy. This disease is caused by an immune incompatibility between the mother and fetus that causes a drop in levels of blood cells called platelets. Researchers took blood samples from 107 fetuses at an average gestational age of 25 weeks. All the fetuses were being monitored because an older sibling had been diagnosed with this condition at birth. Half the fetuses had extremely low levels of platelets. Blood platelet counts continued to drop in many fetuses until they were treated. All fetuses recovered after birth.

A 41-year-old woman with anemia and severe thrombocytopenia. (Case Records of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Case 37-1998)
Article Abstract:
A 41-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital because of heavy menstrual bleeding that caused her to become anemic. Blood tests revealed that her blood platelet count was extremely low. Although she had a history of anemia, her doctors suspected a drug called ranitidine that she was taking for peptic ulcer. When they stopped the drug, her platelet count increased. However, she may also have had iron deficiency anemia. She returned to her native Caribbean island and was unavailable for further investigation.
